Altea tourist information
Altea is defnetly a beautiful town and municipality located in the province of Alicante, Spain, a few kilometers north of Benidorm on the section of Mediterranean coast called the Costa Blanca.
The variety of the landscapes offered in the town of Altea is one of its most surprising features. On Altea's coastline one can appreciate high stone cliffs and picturesque beaches with clean water and fine gravel whitened by the sun. Direction north of Altea the Sierra Bernia Mountain rushes towards the sea on the Mascarat, Barra and Solida projections which frame the small and quiet coves of Altea. Behind that one can see the larger and busier beaches of La Olla, Cap Negret and close to the town centre the Roda and Cap Blanch. Facing to the south of Altea the Sierra Gelada closes the bay which is crowned by the lighthouse of Altea.
Altea shows itself as a typical Costa Blanca village which slides her white houses slowly down the soft slope until it reaches and touches the sea. Located on top of a hill and protected from the cold coastal winds by the mountains on the inland the town of Altea offers all the charm that belongs to those towns anchored by tradition. On top the Parish Church with its slender bell tower and its smug dome covered with blue and white glazed carmic tiles which have turned her into one of the most remarkable milestones and pictured on the Costa Blanca.
Altea, because of its brightness "a village roasted by the sun" as Gabriel Miro wrote refering about it and its privileged location in the centre of the bay has always attracted in a very special way. Those who have once visited Altea, especially artists, painters, writers, sculptors, singers etc. made it a meeting point and a place of residence for the bohemian world already in the 60ths.
The town of Altea still maintains the personality of a village quiet and peaceful, with a fisherman's tradition and an amazing old town which offers the visitor breathtaking views.
