Alboraya tourist information

Alboraya is a town and municipality of the province of Valencia, Spain. It is situated very close to the city of Valencia. Originally a farming community, Alboraia has grown in the last decades following the development of the metropolitan area of Valencia. Better transport connections (including 2 stations of the Valencia metro system : Alboraia-Palmaret and Alboraia-Peris Aragó ), urban exodus from the city and foreign immigration have increased the population from 11,267 (1986) to 18,656 (2002 census). Of these 58.84% declared themselves to be Valencian speakers.

In 1994, 45.8% worked in the service sector, 33% in industry, 16.7% in agriculture and 3.60% in construction. The elections of May 2007 gave the PP an absolute majority with 11 seats. Other seats were represented by the PSOE (7), BLOC-EV (1) and Ciudadanos por Alboraya (Citizens for Alboraya) (2).

Traditional crops are based on irrigated, intensive farming. Especially important are the tiger nuts (Spanish: Chufas; Valencian: Xufes), which are used to produce the world famous horchata, a popular refreshment. The town is actually full of orxateries – bars to relax and chill out while having an horchata in the hot Valencian summers.

The Valencian fantasy writer Laura Gallego García lives in Alboraya.
