Kaunertal tourist information

Kaunertal is a municipality in the Landeck district, of the Tyrol in Austria. It is located app. 15 km southeast of Landeck in a valley with the same name at the upper course of the Inn River. The community has 13 parts. Main source of income is a glacier ski area with 35 km slopes and 10 lifts, which was opened in 1982. Due to the high elevation of the ski area (2200m-3050m) and the glacier it is operational from mid October to sometimes well into June.

The toll road is the fifth highest paved road in the Alps, with 29 180 degree turns leads all the way to a parking lot in 2750m altitude which serves as base for the ski area.

The 6 km long 30,795 million gallons capacity Gepatsch Reservoir (or Gepatsch Stausee) is man-made formed by a 630m long and 130m high rockfill dam constructed in 1961. Water from the lake is used to generate electricity through a 13 km long pipe system, located at the south end of the Kaunertal. The generator facility at Prutz produces 620 million kilowatt hours per year. The lake surface is at an altitude of 1820m.
